Alice's story
Alice was 40 when her life derailed. She found a lump, thought it was a cyst, but went and checked it anyway with a self-funded mammogram. Stage 3 breast cancer wasn’t on her radar, especially with three young kids at home.
“The confirmation of it, the shock of it… your worst nightmare has come true. There’s something growing inside of you that shouldn’t be there, that could kill you.”
“And then you get hit with the treatment plan and you question whether you can get through it. It’s hurdle after hurdle. The diagnosis, the treatment, the surgery… an overwhelming roller coaster of emotions.”
Chemotherapy led to horrific mouth ulcers, hair loss, fatigue, nausea and a burning sensation in her head, as if her ‘brain was being fried’. Then came the mastectomy and reconstruction, followed by radiotherapy.

Mehdi Shahbazpour, Head of Research and Strategic Programmes here at Breast Cancer Foundation NZ, explains why research into other diagnostic methods is changing the game.
“Technology is evolving and so must screening.”
“The holy grail is a blood test that can pick up cancer at the cellular level, before it becomes too big that it’s visible on a mammogram. That blood test already exists. It’s proven to be effective. And that’s really promising.”
“We want to prove, without a shadow of a doubt, that when a test like this is introduced to New Zealand we know how it should be run, who should do the testing, what happens next, and how it can fit into our national screening programme alongside mammograms.”
Our upcoming clinical trial, funded by generous donors, will recruit 150 women under the age of 45 to test the acceptability of this blood test in New Zealand.
