Breast cancer can steal precious moments of motherhood, you can change that
Please give generously to provide women like Kayleigh the specialised support needed to navigate the complexities of breast cancer alongside young children.
Kayleigh's story
Kayleigh aged 33 and mum of toddler Isabelle and 5 month old Willow, found a lump in her armpit and was diagnosed with HER2 positive stage 3 breast cancer. Life took a turn and her world came crashing down.
“Overnight I had to stop breastfeeding to start treatment. It was horrible.”
Breast cancer stole 6 months away from Kayleigh and her children as she endured chemotherapy, a mastectomy and radiation. It was more than the treatments and the side effects. It was the hidden impacts of losing precious bonding moments with baby Willow and how Isabelle had to see her mum.
“When Isabelle came to see me in hospital, I had all these tubes and pumps coming out of me. She was petrified and wouldn’t go near me.”
“All these little things just knock you down. But there there was no medical support for that.”
Breast nurse specialist support is a vital part of after care treatment, Kayleigh experience this first hand and found it to be invaluable.
"When treatment finished, I felt lost and anxious. The nurse phoned me, and I said I’m not OK. The world has carried on, but I’m still picking up the pieces of the life that I missed.”
“I could just be vulnerable with her and acknowledge all the losses that come with cancer.”
Kayleigh’s journey isn’t over just yet. She has a big surgery next year to reconstruct her breast following her mastectomy, she still battles with movement and inter-nerve pain, and she lives with a sense of anxiety.

Because of you
Thanks to your kindness, we were able to send Kayleigh a care package to help make sense of her diagnosis, and her options. It had evidence-based information on Kayleigh’s treatments, as well as a heart-shaped pillow for support after surgery, surgical aids like drain bags, and a port cushion to make car rides more comfortable.
“There were things in there you didn’t even know you would need. It was so incredibly helpful. Not just for me, but for the people who were trying to support me and who wanted to understand.”
