Pink Ribbon Walk 2026 - Auckland

I'm taking part in the Pink Ribbon Walks for the nine women diagnosed with breast cancer each day in New Zealand.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in Kiwi women. 1 in 10 women will be diagnosed with it in their lifetime. And 650 women in Aotearoa die from the disease every year.

That’s why I’m taking part in the Pink Ribbon Walk this year, to help change that.

Please donate to raise funds for life-saving education, life-changing patient support and ground-breaking medical research. And bring us closer to a day when there are zero deaths from breast cancer.

Why?

Why am I doing this 5K walk when I have trouble walking from a disability standpoint? Great question, glad you asked.
My friend posted in the group chat on the Monday about 3 weeks ago saying that her and some friends were doing this walk. I got jealous.
At that point I was walking about 2 km or 3 km a month and I had been saying that I wanted to walk more but wasn't actually following through with it. My personal best in the last 20 years was probably about 4km
I decided to make a change.
I bought a walking frame into the office and started to use that around the office rather than my scooter. The day after after I got home from work I went for a long distance walk and it ended up being 3km but at that point I still was not confident enough to commit to doing 5km.
After the 3km I could barely move my legs for 3 days due to pain but it was good pain.
The following Tuesday evening I went on another walking adventure and just kept going and ended up doing 4.6km. It took me 4 hours 40min. But I knew I could hit the 5k. I signed up for the challenge and I am excited to climb this mountain!

Background

I am Craig Pollok and I live with a neurological condition called MELAS which means that I have infrequent strokes and seizures. The impact of this is that I have a mild speech impediment, increased fatigue and trouble walking. I try to make the most of every moment and see the bright side in life rather than letting the condition define who I am as a person.
I have the best and most supportive family and a community of friends who show up consistently but also call me out if there are areas I can improve onĀ
