I'm hosting a Pink Ribbon Breakfast for the nine women diagnosed with breast cancer each day in New Zealand.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in Kiwi women. 1 in 9 women will be diagnosed with it in their lifetime. And 650 women in Aotearoa die from the disease every year.

That’s why I’m hosting a Pink Ribbon Breakfast this year, to help change that.

Please donate to raise funds for life-saving education, life-changing patient support and ground-breaking medical research. And bring us closer to a day when there are zero deaths from breast cancer.

Pink Ribbon Brunch: A Community Triumph

Pink Ribbon Brunch: A Community Triumph

At Te Putahi-Nui-o-Rehua, our Trust in Kaikohe, we are committed to supporting whānau through employment and study pathways, among other initiatives. Recognizing that health is wealth, we strive to bridge the gap for our more isolated community members, providing them with opportunities to be part of a team. From a world of survival to a world of thriving, we are dedicated to making a positive impact.

This year, Megan, our Kai Ara Honohono, led an inspiring initiative for our tangata to host a Pink Ribbon Brunch. The event was a remarkable success, especially for many women who had never participated in such an event or even had their breasts checked before.

It’s been a couple of months since our unforgettable Pink Ribbon Brunch on May 23rd, 2024, and I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the incredible day we shared.

Our guest speakers truly touched our hearts with their raw and inspiring stories. Their courage and resilience reminded us all of the importance of supporting breast cancer awareness and research. Their words left an indelible mark on everyone present.

The organization of the event was nothing short of spectacular. For the event planners, it was their first time planning, hosting, and delivering an event like this, and they did an outstanding job. The ladies handled everything from invitations, sponsors, gifts, and kai preparation to the fun interactive games and kai presentation. Our talented group of Tangata worked tirelessly to ensure that every detail was perfect. From the beautifully arranged decorations to the deliciously prepared food, their dedication and passion were unmatched.

And let’s not forget the entertainment! The games, including the hilarious “Bingo and Ping Pong a Bra,” had everyone laughing and bonding. It was a day filled with education, fun, and heartfelt moments—a true celebration of life and hope.

For many of the wahine, this event was close to home as whānau members have suffered or passed away from breast cancer. This was a chance to learn, know when to get checks, and take responsibility for their health. These wahine now have the knowledge and strength to pass this information on to their extended whānau.

Renee, a coordinator of the event, shared her heartfelt reaction: “I was deeply moved by the community’s overwhelming support for the event and its cause. My cousin’s battle and survival made me truly appreciate the incredible journey and resilience of those affected by breast cancer. Her journey was particularly challenging as she lost a breast, which deeply affected her as a woman and a wife who valued her appearance. The impact on her self-esteem and her role within her family was profound. While my whānau and I were solely focused on her survival, she was grappling with the emotional and psychological effects of her changing body. Witnessing her strength and resilience through this ordeal has been both humbling and inspiring.”

I’m thrilled to share that we not only met but exceeded our fundraising goal. Thanks to the generosity of our attendees, we raised over $200.00 for breast cancer research. This achievement speaks volumes about our community’s commitment to making a difference.

As we look back on that sunny May day, I want to express my gratitude to each and every person who contributed to the success of our Pink Ribbon Brunch. Together, we are making strides in the fight against breast cancer, and I am honored to be part of such a remarkable group.

Here’s to many more memorable events in the future!
