Pink Ribbon Walk 2025 - Christchurch

I'm taking part in the Pink Ribbon Walks for the nine women diagnosed with breast cancer each day in New Zealand.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in Kiwi women. 1 in 9 women will be diagnosed with it in their lifetime.

I have not been impacted by breast cancer directly, but even then, breast cancer is so common that even if we are not directly affected, our community is impacted.

My own example of this is a friend whose mother had breast cancer. I don't remember much of this experience as we were quite young, but I remember how sad and worried my friend was, and that hurt my heart. Her mum recovered, but whenever my friend would be particularly out of sorts, even when we weren't getting along, the worry and concern for her and her mum would come back.

I think part of our community experiencing cancer is enough of a reason to advocate and support people facing it and research into treatment, and that is one of my reasons for walking this October.

My other reason comes from one of my own wellbeing goals= Earlier this year, I decided that I wanted to get back to hiking fit. I love hiking and missed being able to do it as much as I used to and I also missed how it contributed to my wellbeing. I enlisted my dear friend Rose and set up a weekly walk. Almost every week, Rose and I venture out on a walk, hike or other adventure. I have thoroughly enjoyed myself, and so when I saw the Pink Ribbon Walk come up, I suggested we do it. This is one of the reasons I decided to walk this year.

I know times are tough, but if you want to, and if you have some spare change, I would appreciate your donation.

Love, Mel
