PINK RIBBON RIDE AUCKLAND

By Julie Swift

Thanks for helping raise vital funds for breast cancer education, research and patient support.

Every badge, every donation and every bike dressed in pink makes a difference.

Why we ride
Breast cancer is the most common cancer in New Zealand women. 1 in 10 women will be diagnosed with it in their lifetime. And more than 650 women in Aotearoa die from the disease every year.*

Men get breast cancer too, with around 26 Kiwi men diagnosed each year. While rare, the most common symptoms in men are a painless breast lump or nipple discharge.* With so many blokes in our riding community, we'd love every one of you to know the signs.

Our story
The Pink Ribbon Ride began in 2004 under the Auckland branch of WIMA, the Women's International Motorcycle Association. When the WIMA NZ President asked the New Zealand branches to support Breast Cancer Foundation NZ, the Auckland branch jumped at the chance.

Members rallied for sponsors and prizes, some of whom still support us today, and on 10 October 2004 the first ride rolled out from Selwyn College, Kohimarama, to Western Springs: 132 bikes, 150 badges sold and a cheque for $1,395.45 to Breast Cancer Foundation NZ.

After the 2017 ride, WIMA was no longer able to resource future rides, so in 2018 a passionate group of former members picked up the reins and kept it going as the Auckland Pink Ribbon Ride.

More than twenty years on from that first ride, hundreds of riders turn Auckland's streets pink every October.

The people who keep it rolling
This ride is run entirely by volunteers. Our current planning team is Julie Swift, Marion Morris, Peggy O'Neal, Kat Salotti and Nicky Glover, with some of us involved from the very first ride. A huge thank you to everyone, past and present, who has lent a hand to keep the ride rolling.

Past committee and volunteers: Deb Chappel, Cris Bell, Stacey Baker, Christine Mudford, Diana Peace, Lisa Shelley, Janice Millman, Heidi Millard, Helen and Anthony Barry, Mary Love, Jo Armstrong, Linda and John Glassell.

Where your donation goes
By fundraising for Breast Cancer Foundation NZ, we're helping fund:

  1. Ground-breaking projects by some of our country's top researchers
  2. Education about breast health, the importance of regular screening and the signs and symptoms of breast cancer
  3. Free support services for breast cancer patients and their families

Donate today
Can't make the ride? You can still be part of it. Donate today, directly to Breast Cancer Foundation NZ, and help make zero deaths from breast cancer a reality.
