Hair we Share

By Cristene Hope Trenuela-Chan

We are helping raise vital funds for breast cancer education, research and patient support.

We all have known someone who is a breast cancer survivors, and sadly we have also lost family and friends to breast cancer. Often an unfortunate side-effect of treatment is the loss of hair which can make patients feel self-conscious.   We are colleagues (Cristene, Rebecca & Hayley)  who have been growing our hair over the past couple of years and we are donating it to Freedom Hair so that we can make a positive difference in the lives of others.  We invite you to join us by donating to this amazing cause.

Every year 3,500 Kiwis are diagnosed with breast cancer, and more than 650 will die.

By fundraising for Breast Cancer Foundation NZ, we are helping fund –

  1. Ground-breaking projects by some of our countries top researchers
  2. Education about breast health, the importance of regular screening and the signs and symptoms of breast cancer
  3. Free support services for breast cancer patients and their families

Donate today to help make zero deaths from breast cancer a reality.

We will cut our hair in October to coincide with Breast Cancer Awareness Month and share regular updates!

My Updates

It's time to Share the Hair

Tuesday 1st Oct
It is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and it is time to share the hair. This will be the second time I have donated my hair to Freedom Hair. My friend's journey with breast cancer was a game changer for how I view life. She was very self-conscious when she lost her hair during her chemo treatment, and she shared with me that it was really had to find human hair wigs. My hair grows so fast, and it was not a hard decision to donate my hair so that there would be more available to people that need this. It is my small way of contributing. This time round I decided I would tell people about it, because one: as part of my healing process in losing an amazing friend and still be connected to her in some way, and two to help raise some much-needed fund to help provide the wrap around services that Breast Cancer Foundation provides.   Thank you to those that has supported us so far! Photos will be up soon on the end product!

Update

Tuesday 13th Aug
Rebecca share's her story:
Growing up I never really liked my hair.  It was too thick to do cool styles, too straight to be curly, too wavy to be straight, too dark to colour - it was just 'too' not good enough.  A couple of years ago I saw a news article about a girl growing her hair so she could donate it to Freedom Hair.  I saw this as an opportunity to use my thick dark brown hair for good and be in a position where I could make a difference and help give someone else their confidence back.  I have friends who are breast cancer survivors, and I know that this is a practical way of supporting women who are experiencing hair loss as they go through their cancer treatments.
