ASCENT FOR AWARENESS

By Tess Hurndell

I’m helping raise vital funds for breast cancer education, research and patient support.

My name is Tess, and I am a 16-year-old high school student, currently attending Liger Leadership Academy in Queenstown. Led and created by me, this event holds deep personal meaning, as it was inspired after witnessing the struggle of cancer diagnoses in my father, my cousin, and several of my closest friends' family. Cancer patients and their families should always have the resources and support that every family facing this disease deserves. The need for funding is urgent. Female health is often underfunded and stigmatized, guiding the choice to focus our efforts on the pressing issue of breast cancer, which affects one in nine New Zealand women over their lifetime.

The Peak-To-Peak Challenge Fundraiser is a sponsored journey dedicated to raising awareness and critical funds for the Breast Cancer Society. Located in the hills of Lake Hawea, Breast Peak and Breast Hill are 8km apart, with the walk between requiring a descent of 140m, and ascent of 186m. Every $250 means another journey from one ‘breast’ to the next- a mission to be completed from Dec 15th - 11th.
With our minimal goal of $5, 000, this means a journey of at least 160km. To reach this goal, we only need 300 of Queenstown's 53,800 to donate $15.
