We are hosting a Pink Ribbon Breakfast for the ten women diagnosed with breast cancer each day in New Zealand.

We are the Otago Women's Collective (OWC), founded this year at the University of Otago. Our executive comprises eleven wahine who sought to create a community where women can pursue their academic goals without sacrificing their well-being.

Women in academic spaces often feel a reluctance to reach out for support, and OWC was created to change that. Through professional and personal development events and a wider peer support system, we want reaching out to feel natural rather than daunting.

We also know, through our own long hours studying at the library, that balance is what allows us to truly thrive academically. As wahine, we believe we can do it all — and that means championing wellbeing just as fiercely as academic success. Whether that looks like getting outside for some exercise or simply taking a breath between study sessions, we are committed to supporting the whole person, not just the student.

The Pink Ribbon Breakfast resonates deeply with OWC because, at its core, it is about women showing up for one another. Breast cancer has touched the lives of so many women we know and love, and we are passionate about raising awareness, particularly among young women, because women's health should never be an afterthought. This event reflects everything we stand for: community, support, and wahine looking out for wahine.
