I'm hosting a Pink Ribbon Breakfast for the nine women diagnosed with breast cancer each day in New Zealand.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in Kiwi women. 1 in 9 women will be diagnosed with it in their lifetime. And 650 women in Aotearoa die from the disease every year.

That’s why I’m hosting a Pink Ribbon Breakfast this year, to help change that.

Please donate to raise funds for life-saving education, life-changing patient support and ground-breaking medical research. And bring us closer to a day when there are zero deaths from breast cancer.

Naomi's story

In March 2022, a month before my screening mammogram was due, I found a lump in my left breast. No family history but I didn't like the feel of this lump, so I saw a GP the next day. Due to her concern, I decided to act quickly and made an appointment at Auckland Breast Centre as a private patient. A day later, I had a 3D mammogram and during the ultrasound, I heard the words I never imagined hearing - "it looks like cancer - you will need a biopsy".  The biopsy was done a couple of hours later and results confirmed my worst fears - Stage 2, Grade 2, Her2+ invasive, aggressive, ductal carcinoma.  This was the start of a 20-month journey of regular MRIs, echocardiograms, blood tests, specialist appointments, chemo and targeted therapy, surgeries and radiation. I lost over 12kg and experienced a range of other side effects with fatigue, brain fog, peripheral neuropathy, dizziness and reduced heart function being the most difficult to manage.
The support and kindness of my husband, family, friends and colleagues helped make the journey easier but it was a tough one. BCF nurses, webinars and targeted advice and info helped me navigate my way through each step of the journey.
After 4 months of chemo and targeted therapy, no cancer was detected on MRI. I still needed to have a therapeutic breast reduction to remove the lump and surrounding tissue. During surgery, 2 sentinel lymph nodes were removed to check if the cancer had spread - it hadn't. Pathology showed no cancer cells in the samples and that I had responded well to the chemo and targeted therapy. I went to a BCF funded physio post op to treat cording and lymphodema and recovered over the next 6 months. The next step was radiation to kill any undetected cancer cells and reduce the chances of recurrence. In the meantime, targeted therapy continued every 3 weeks for another 8 months. I saw a BCF funded counsellor when I was trying to find my new "normal" and decide what to do next. In October 2023, I took the final step and had reduction surgery on the right breast to achieve symmetry.
I've just had my 2nd annual follow up mammogram and ultrasound and all is OK. The fear of long-term side effects from chemo and radiation and of recurrence is very real. Today I am feeling well, have a positive outlook and have hope for a future, that 2 years ago I wasn't sure I would have.
Many of my supporters had stories of family or friends who had breast cancer. With 9 women diagnosed daily, it is a confronting disease that will likely touch someone you know and care about. Your donations to support the Breast Cancer Foundation and the cancer journey of other women will be put to good use. Check out their website for more info . Don't hesitate... donate now. Thank you.
