Tēnā koutou,
I am a cancer fighter since diagnosis of breast cancer in August 2021. I lost both my parents during this journey and so my Pink Ribbon Parakuihi (brekkie) is dedicated to my Mum, Rene Lilian Hawke nee Thomson. She fought her cancer hard and fast. Discovered after major abdominal pain and a general surgery of her gall bladder was immediately halted as the cancer had spread to most organs in her tummy. Well, she lasted 3months and she gave me strength right up to her last breath. Dad passed in 2022. They were married for 62 years. Cancer does not have to be the focus whanau – we celebrate each day with harikoa koa-JOY!!!

Kia ora whanau - the pink ribbon breakfast is going to be fun, informative and reflective. I feel my Mum everywhere and especially during this month of May. She was my model of courage and power. She loved to have conversations with people. She had a sharp evolving mind. The breakfast is a tribute to her commitment to her family, Dad , my brothers and her siblings. See you there!

It is all about Rene…
These are Mum’s sisters in struggle. Left is Aunty Rachel and right is Aunty Aroha. Both are married to Hawke men, Uncles Grant and Bob respectively. Here’s the thing - there bond was so great “no man could pull asunder “. They both miss Mum. And I love them heaps for it. Let’s say a little prayer for them both and give them reason to be proud of us.

It’s all about Mum but Dad figures at the Parakuihi too…
Māmā loved her husband very much. She committed her life to him and his people. Of course 64 years of marriage has it’s challenges but after he passed on May 22, 2022 -( yes three years from our Pink Ribbon Parakuihi), Mum was adamant that Dad would be placed on Takaparawhau. And now she lies beside him on the whenua they both fought for. So come to the event -Date: Thursday 22 May 2025; 8-10 Tāmaki Drive, 0630-0830. Mum has been gone 12 months.
Today, 12 months ago you said goodbye with your eyes. Parata and I beside you as you held our hands softly. Mum you were brave. You fought that evil cancer head on and never gave it the satisfaction of giving in. I miss you each day. My close friend, your friend Manu says “she is with you, she is close and know she is in another state of being right by your side. Your tears are for you”. Say hi to Dad for me. Your sunshine xxx
